The Cascades women's soccer squad takes on the city of Edmonton this weekend, facing both programs based in the Alberta capital.
Both the MacEwan Griffins and the Alberta Pandas present stiff tests for the UFV side – the two teams are currently tied atop the Prairie Division standings, and have yet to lose this season. The Cascades, for their part, are riding a two-game win streak and are undefeated in three.
"It's never easy to travel in Canada West," UFV bench boss
Rob Giesbrecht noted. "We're going to the two top teams in the Prairie Division, and we're going to have to be on our game to give ourselves a chance to get something from the games. Both teams have special players that can impact games, and both are tough to break down and are well-organized. We're excited about the challenge this weekend presents."
Players to watch: Cascades senior captain
Brittney Zacharuk is coming off a CW women's third star of the week nod, after racking up two goals and two assists in a pair of weekend wins over Manitoba and Winnipeg. She claimed UFV's career assists record last Friday, and is just three points back of the all-time points record of 36, currently held by Monika Levarsky. The Griffins boast a dynamic fifth-year star of their own in
Suekiana Choucair. She's the CW second star of the week after piling up three goals and two assists in a pair of weekend wins. Staying with the senior theme, Alberta's fifth-year midfielder
Brenna Mattiello paced the team with 12 points (five goals, seven assists) last season, and she's currently co-leading the squad once again with two goals and an assist in 2019.
