Box Score Victoria, BC – The UFV Cascades received a blow to their Canada West playoff hopes on Friday afternoon at Rotary Stadium, as a red card and a goal from Luciana Andrews proved the difference in a 1-0 win for Trinity Western.
The loss drops the Cascades to 3-7-3 on the season, and the outside of the playoff picture, while the Spartans improve to 8-3-2 on the season.
How it Happened:
The Cascades looked to be the stronger team in the opening stages, as
Emerson Toop found
Kiana Langston in the box, but a good save from TWU's Yasmine Pahal was followed by a clearance off the line to keep it scoreless.
The Spartans grew into the game throughout the opening half before finding their best opportunity early in the second half, but Luciana Andrews shot from in close was deftly turned away by
Alana Madec diving to her right.
The game found its pivotal moment in the 60
th minute when Cascades senior
Sarah Belcher had her legs get tied up with a TWU attacker and resulted in a straight red card. Luciana Andrews would find a breakthrough for the Spartans just one minute later as she received a pass from Sophie Crowther and tucked it into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0.
The Cascades pushed from there, earning big chances from
Kiana Langston and
Keanna Bentley in the late stages, but the player disadvantage proved too much to overcome as the match ended with a one goal Spartan victory.
Up Next:
The Cascades return to Rotary Stadium for the last time this season on Sunday afternoon against the Victoria Vikes, while Trinity Western will close out their regular season on the road at Thompson Rivers on Saturday.
